GLAUCOMA SERVICES

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness , next to cataract, with a global prevalence of about 67 million. It is often called’ THE SILENT THIEF OF SIGHT’ as the vision loss it causes, usually progresses slowly and is permanent.

If diagnosed and treated early, it is possible to slow or stop the progression of disease. People aged 40 years and above, those with short sight or frequent changes in spectacle power, or history of glaucoma in the family are all at a higher risk. So these individuals should have regular eye check-up to detect optic nerve head changes, variations in pressure of the eye, and changes in visual field.

Most people feel fine and do not notice a change in their vision at first, because the initial loss is confined to the periphery or sides. The visual acuity or sharpness of vision is maintained until late in the disease. Hazy or blurred vision, appearance of coloured haloes around light sources eye pain, headache etc are some of the symptoms.
