DIABETIC RETINOPATHY SERVICES
India is deemed to be the diabetic capital of the world. The diabetic population in the country is close to hitting the alarming mark of nearly 70 million by the year 2025. Diabetes has become the 5th leading cause of blindness across the globe because of the high incidence of the complication – Diabetic Retinopathy, affecting about 18%.
The longer the duration of disease and poorer the control of blood sugar the higher is the risk of developing of Diabetic Retinopathy.
The high blood sugar levels in a poorly controlled, long standing diabetes damage the minute blood vessels of the retina ,leading to breakage, leaking and eventually blindness. High blood pressure and lipid levels also hasten this. Diabetes can be treated and the consequences avoided with proper diet , physical activity, medication, regular follow up and treatment of complications.
A major reason behind the high prevalence of DR is the lack of awareness among the people who fail to get their eyes screened and diagnosed, thus not receiving timely and proper medical treatment. The disease often has no early warning signs and the symptoms like diminished or blurred vision, double vision and appearance of floaters ( seeing moving black dots in the visual field) if at all, appear late in the course. This can adversely affect the job, reading habits, social interactions, outdoor life etc of such patients thus reducing the quality of life significantly.
Annual /Yearly screening of diabetic patients by visual acuity testing, dilated fundus examination, slit lamp biomicroscopy and perimetry can pick up early changes and enable early treatment intervention whereby the occurrence of new cases can be reduced even upto 90%
