Retina is the light sensing tissue at the back of the eye.A person sees clearly when the images are properly relayed to the brain by the retina.

There are several diseases of the retina of which Diabetic Retinopathy is the most common.It is seen mostly in long standing and uncontrolled Diabetes.

Macular Degeneration(AMD) is another common entity seen in people above 50 yrs of age.The macula (centre of the retina) which in helps in sharp and clear central vision is affected.

Just like strokes in other parts of the body,the eyes also suffer from strokes.This happens when the blood vessels of the retina are blocked .The eyes suffer a drop in vision and damage to its vital structures ,the severity depends on the extent and location of occlusion. Children who wear glasses(myopes) and elderly who experience cobwebs and flashes need retinal evaluation to rule out retinal tears and holes.

The majority of retinal diseases can be screened ,diagnosed and successfully treated in the OPD,as the treatment options have evolved much.The procedures undertaken in such cases include dilated fundus examination, OCT (Optical coherence tomography), Lasers and Injections.
